Camp Hill: Best Place to Live in the Midstate

Learn local insights about the quintessential West Shore community.

Camp Hill is located in the West Shore region of Cumberland County just two miles southwest of Harrisburg, the state capital of Pennsylvania.

What the small town may lack in a bustling downtown scene, it more than makes up for with its family-friendly setting.

Foremost, the residents of this walkable community love the charming neighborhood full of unique homes and ample sidewalks. To many of its 7,900 residents, Camp Hill is "just home."

But let's take a further look into what makes this West Shore community so special.

Camp Hill History

Camp Hill is not only lovely, but it’s also a historic town.

Most noteworthy, the northernmost Civil War engagement of the Gettysburg campaign took place at the Battle of Sporting Hill in present-day Camp Hill on June 30, 1863.

It seems like the town's name originated from a split in the congregation of Peace Church. One group began having religious camp meetings outdoors on a hill. Consequently, Camp Hill became a borough in 1885.

Education

Camp Hill offers a variety of fantastic education options including public K–12 schools, private institutions, and higher education opportunities such as Messiah College in Mechanicsburg and Central Penn Business College in Summerdale.

Things to Do

There’s plenty to make an adventure seeker’s heart beat faster in the West Shore boroughs.

For example, enjoy hiking in the Appalachian Mountains, boating on the Susquehanna River, fishing in the Conodoguinet Creek, cycling through Cumberland Valley, kayaking down the Yellow Breeches Creek, or skiing the slopes at Roundtop Mountain Resort.

Also, residents love the town’s three public parks: Siebert Park, Willow Park, and Beverly Park.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing day, visit the Camp Hill Shopping Center located right off Route 15.

Want more selection? You're in luck!

The businesses, dining, and cultural opportunities of downtown Harrisburg and Hershey are just a short distance away.

Travelers have easy access to Interstates 81 and 83, U.S. Routes 11 and 15, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) making Camp Hill a commuter’s dream.

Best Place to Live and Play

In conclusion, nestled between the Susquehanna River and famous Appalachian Trail, Camp Hill is a picturesque residential community.

With exceptional schools, oodles of outdoor recreation, and easy transit, the borough offers modern amenities with small-town charm.

Therefore it’s easy to see why Camp Hill is a wonderful place to live and play in South Central Pennsylvania.

The workers are quick and efficient. They got the work done earlier than expected and did a good job cleaning up the work site afterwards. I am quite pleased with the end result.
