Installing a New Bathroom Sink? Here Are 7 Things to Consider Before You Do

Are you interested in remodeling your bathroom but want to start small? Is your current bathroom dull or unappealing? Do you have to spend a lot of time on cleaning and maintenance?

As a homeowner, you can recoup up to 50 percent of your investment in a bathroom renovation. A fantastic way to breathe new life into your bathroom is by replacing an outdated sink.

Before you start, there are seven things you must consider before installing a bathroom sink. Doing so will help you make an informed decision on your remodeling project and ensure you’re prepared.

7 Things to Consider Before Installing a Bathroom Sink

Before you replace a bathroom vanity sink, the following are the seven things we advise that you consider before installing a bathroom sink.

1. How Much Can You Afford?

Before you replace a bathroom vanity sink, create a budget and determine what you can afford. Knowing what you can afford upfront will make it easier to pick out the styles and materials that you would like for your bathroom. It will also keep you from falling in love with styles and additions that may be outside your budget.

2. How Big is Your Bathroom?

Before installing a bathroom sink, make sure you plan your renovation thoroughly. Your remodeling options, including the style of sink you should install, hinge on the size of your bathroom.

3. How Much Storage Do You Need?

Do you need extra storage? Do you enjoy sink styles with cabinetry? These are questions that you should consider before installing a bathroom sink. If you will not use a cabinet under your sink, why install one? Sink styles that forgo cabinetry underneath typically provide more floor space that can be used for other purposes.

4. What Are the Maintenance Requirements?

Before installing a bathroom sink, consider the maintenance requirements that certain styles or materials need. How often do you want to clean your bathroom? Some materials, such as ceramic and solid surfaces, can be far easier to clean and require little maintenance compared to other materials.

5. What Material Should You Use?

Before installing a bathroom sink, you will need to decide on the materials to use. Sinks are commonly made in several different types of materials.

  • Ceramic: Ceramic sinks are very common. These sinks have durable surfaces that are resistant to chips and scratches. They make fantastic choices for busier bathrooms. Ceramic is also a popular choice because it’s low-maintenance and very easy to clean.
  • Porcelain: Porcelain is a very durable type of hardened clay. Because of its durability, these sinks tend to last a lifetime. Porcelain sinks are resistant to harsh chemicals and heat. However, they are susceptible to chips and stains.
  • Stone: Natural stone sinks are beautiful, eye-catching, and unique. They are made of materials such as granite, sandstone, marble, green jade, onyx, and more. While beautiful and durable, stone sinks do require more maintenance. These sinks can’t be cleaned with abrasive chemicals, and they must be resealed once or twice each year to retain their natural shine.
  • Glass: Tempered glass is stronger than regular glass and naturally heat-resistant. However, like glass, it can still be broken if dropped or struck.

6. What Style of Sink is Best for Your Bathroom?

Installing a bathroom sink? Plan ahead by reviewing popular sink styles for bathrooms.

  • Undermount Sinks: If you need to replace a bathroom vanity sink, you can consider an undermount sink – a style of sink with cabinetry. In undermount sinks, the sink sits inside the countertop rather than atop it. These sinks are great for busy family bathrooms. Undermount sinks provide a clean look and are easy to clean. However, the types of material you may use for this sink style is limited.
  • Top-Mount Sinks: Top-mount sinks can be used with most materials. These sinks are similar to undermount sinks, except they sit on top of the counter. These sinks have an elegant look and feel and are easily cleaned.
  • Pedestal Sinks: If you are considering installing a pedestal bathroom sink, it is worth knowing that these sinks do not have any counter space or cabinetry. This simple, aesthetically pleasing sink style is a classic and is suited for most bathroom styles.
  • Wall-Mounted Sinks: Wall-mounted sinks are space savers. These sinks are fixed directly onto the wall and do not include any cabinetry beneath it. These sinks can be more challenging to install as plumbing must be positioned inside of the wall for an aesthetic look.

7. Should You Hire a Contractor?

Installing a bathroom sink can be difficult based on the sink style, material, and the design of your home. While some styles of sink offer greater DIY options, others may be best left to the professionals.
