How to Organize Your Closet by Color to Help Every Day Be Bright

Is your closet is out of control? It’s time to take action. You set aside some time to organize your clothes but when it comes time to actually do it you end up completely stumped. It doesn’t seem like a big deal at first but when you’re surrounded by piles of clothes, it can get overwhelming. You know that once you find the ideal organizational system, you’ll never need to spend a full weekend organizing your clothes ever again. Have you considered organizing your closet by color?

Organizing by clothing type is another way to go. Should you organize your closet by color or type? Read on to find out the pros and cons of each!

Choosing to Organize by Color or Type

When it comes to whether you should organize clothes by color or category, it’s important to look at the pros and cons of each system.

Why Organize Your Closet by Color?

Color-coding your closet can help you save time in the morning. Even when you’re incredibly tired, you can remember the color of your favorite dress. All you have to do is glance at the closet to see the exact location of your red dress. It’s so much easier than having to remember that you moved your dresses to another part of the closet during your last organization session. Sorting by color significantly reduces sifting time.

Getting rid of clothes you no longer wear or that you don’t particularly like can help, too. It’s easy to lose certain articles in between other clothes. After some digging, you find a top and exclaim, “I forgot I had this.” Getting rid of excess clothes and organizing by color can prevent this.

Why Organize Your Closet by Type?

Many people organize their closet by type. Pants with pants, shirts with shirts, etc. It makes sense but is it as practical as it seems?

  • The benefits: You know exactly where your pants are, so there’s no frantic searching first thing in the morning
  • Why it doesn’t always work: You can go overboard. Who What Wear points out that some people get as granular as organizing their jeans by brand, color, cut, size or style. This can feel overwhelming and can be difficult to maintain.

How to Organize Your Closet by Color

If you’re ready to save time and effort when you dress, color coding your closet is the way to go. Here are some tips that will help you organize your closet by color.

1. Start by Decluttering

Decluttering is important for everyone to do regularly, but it’s especially helpful when you have a small closet. If your closet is stuffed to the brim, no amount of color coding is going to help.

Start by taking everything out of your closet. Put everything on your bed and go through each article one-by-one. Ask yourself:

  • How often do I wear this?
  • Do I still want this?
  • Does it fit?
  • Is it in good shape?

Asking these questions will help you determine what stays and what goes.

2. Color Coordinate Your Clothes

Now, make piles of clothes in similar colors.

3. Choose Your Closet Color Scheme

There are two ways to color coordinate your closet. You can choose to have a color-coordinated closet from light to dark or you can go with ROYGBIV.

  • Light-to-Dark: Start with your white clothes and organize them so the darkest colors are at the other end of the closet
  • ROYGBIV: The colors of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Professional organizers tend to prefer this technique. It offers the best contrast between colors, making it easier to distinguish your clothes when you’re in a hurry. If you go this route, you’ll have to choose where to put your neutral clothes (white, black, gray, brown, etc.).

4. Figure Out Where to Put Multi-Colored Items

When organizing your closet by color, you might feel stumped by multi-colored clothes. All you have to do is determine the dominant color in the garment. Then, put it with like-colored clothes. Let’s say you have a shirt that has pink, green, turquoise, and purple. If the dominant color is purple, you’ll store the shirt with your purple garments.

Combine Organizational Techniques – the Best of Both Worlds

Another way to organize your closet is to use the color-coding technique in addition to sorting clothes by type. To do this, start by emptying your closet and decluttering. Then, make piles of skirts, shirts, pants, etc. Within those piles, color-coordinate your clothes.

Such a system may not be as aesthetically pleasing as a fully color-coordinated closet, but some people find it helpful to organize by type or silhouette, as well as color.

Increase Your Level of Organization with a Closet Organization System

Another way to save time and effort each day is to invest in a closet organization system from Harrisburg Kitchen & Bath.

Even the best color coordination can’t keep your closet organized if you aren’t fully utilizing your space. You could try individual closet organizers, but it can be frustrating to find the best-fitting pieces.

Instead of trying to develop a DIY organizational system, you should talk to us about ClosetMaid organization systems. Our organizers will turn your space into a beautiful display of your favorite clothes and accessories.

The ClosetMaid system is frustration-free. From design to installation, we take care of everything!

Why Invest Time, Effort and Money into Closet Organization?

You don’t keep tidy and organized simply because it looks good. There are so many benefits to staying organized. It truly touches every aspect of our lives.

An organized home can help reduce feelings of anxiety, stress and depression. It can improve productivity and help you save a lot of time. Staying organized can also help you make healthier choices throughout the day, like eating healthy meals and taking the time to work out.

Additionally, a tidy closet can improve relationships, particularly if you share a closet with a loved one. No more bickering over lost clothes or who has more space. Keeping your closet organized will take some time and effort, but ultimately, it’s completely worth it.

The workers are quick and efficient. They got the work done earlier than expected and did a good job cleaning up the work site afterwards. I am quite pleased with the end result.
